In the surf we are still catching speckled trout and a few red drum. In the waterways and the river the water temperature is about 5 degrees lower than in the surf, which makes it more difficult to hook up on a fish. There are still some trout, drum, and stripped bass in the river. No report for offshore fishing.
This week’s fishing tip: Outboard motors and out drive water pumps.
I have seen so many time people starting their boat motors at the boat ramp before launching to make sure everything is working properly.
(BIG MISTAKE!)
Your outboard and out drive has a rubber impella inside a stainless steel housing. We all know friction creates heat. When you hit your starter you are spinning your rubber water pump, which without water will cause it to melt on the stainless steel housing. This will lead to very expensive problems. A pump impella should be replaced at least every two years. Average cost for an impella is about $50.00 if you do it yourself. I do mine about twice a year due to the fact that I use my boat about every day. If you feel you can’t do this on your own, have it done by a professional. It will be money well spent. People are still catching speckled trout and a few red drum in the surf. Inshore fishing is still very slow with still a few speckled trout and drum being caught. There are no reports for offshore and near shore fishing.
This week’s fishing tip: When fishing in shallow water it is very easy to spook fish out of a fishing hole. It is important to approach your spot quietly and slowly. Have your anchor ready and don’t throw it overboard. Let it down gently. Even dropping or slamming a cooler lid will scare fish away. Your boat is like an amplified drum. Talking loud or radios have no affect. Be sure you have a good anchor that won’t drag. If you have bait leftover, don’t throw it away. If it’s still in good condition, immediately after you get home, freeze it for another day. Shrimp and minnows are hard to come by at certain times of the year.
