Affordable Charters Fishing Report 2-22-09

In the surf we are still catching speckled trout & a few red drum. In the waterways and the river the water temperature is about 5 degrees lower than in the surf which makes it more difficult to hook up on a fish. There are still some trout, drum, catfish, a few Virginia mullet & stripped bass in the river.

This weeks fishing tip is on outboard motors and outdrive water pumps. I have seen so many times people starting there boat motors at the boat ramp before launching to make sure everything is working properly. (BIG MISTAKE) Your outboard & outdrive has a rubber impella inside a stainless steel housing. We all know friction creates heat. When you hit your starter you are spinning your rubber water pump which without water will cause it to melt on the stainless steel housing. This will lead to very expensive problems. A pump impella should be replaced at least every 2 years. Average cost for an impella is about $50 if you do it yourself. I do mine about twice a year due to the fact that I use my boat about every day. If you feel you can’t do this on your own have it done by a professional. It will be money well spent. If you have any questions about this feel free to give me a call. Keep fishing and stay safe.

In the surf on Masonboro Island there have been some nice size red drum caught & a few Virginia mullet. In the river & bays red & black drum, catfish, striped bass, some speckled trout & around Southport some nice size Virginia mullet & small black bass.

Fishing tip of the week: At the mouth of the Cape Fear River at the last of the falling tide the Virginia mullet bite has been pretty good this past week. Keep fishing & stay safe.
