Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. Things are beginning to really slow down on the fishing with the cooler water temperatures. Now thats not saying you can’t catch a fish in the surf or sound now. Some decent Trout are still around and Reds are still being cooperative. Lea Island is a hot spot if you have a boat to get there. Fish the bar at the inlet and the sloughs just off the beach in front of the house. Be prepared for a big bull this time of the year as well. I’ve had some friends pull some 20-30 pounders out of the surf in the late fall and winter on Lea Island. If you’re not hardcore enough to brave the elements this time of the year you can start getting ready for next year. Remember Christmas is just around the corner and Santa might bring you something on your wish list. You do have a wish list laying around for the family to find, don’t you? Unless you want a tie or socks or underwear you better get it done and in an visible location.
I’ve got a good one for you, a few weeks ago I went hunting and my Brother-in-law called my wife and asked her what to get me for Christmas that was’nt hunting or fishing related. Being the wonderful wife she is her reply was. Well he’s either hunting and fishing or thinking about hunting and fishing! What can I say, she’s right!
Duck season went out Saturday and will come back in on the 16th until Jan. 27. Deer season is in until Jan.1 Quail, rabbit and squirrel is in now and a squirrel hunt is great fun with the kids. Check you regulations digest or go on-line at ncwildlife.org .
Saturday I went to Harkers Island to theCore Sound Decoy festival and had a marvelous time. Decoy carvers from all over were there and the Waterfowl museum is amazing. It’s a great day trip to take the family to Harkers Island, see the museum and the Cape Lookout National Park. Ferries are available to go to the lighthouse and explore, see the wild horse’s and enjoy nature.

I also went duck hunting on Saturday morning and we got a drake and hen buffle head and a drake black duck. I ain’t saying where on the sound cause I’m getting run out of my honeyhole now that folks are discovering duck hunting around here. Maybe this cold weather will push plenty of birds down from up north for the last season. Keep praying for cold weather up north boys.
Well thats about it for this week folks. Remember to take a kid with you and be safe. Capt. David
