Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. Well the water temps are slowly coming up and I’m hearing of a few fish being caught. Lea Island is a usual hotspot this time of the year and this year is no different. Some big Reds are around the north end, so be sure to take some heavy tackle. A lot of these fish are double digit fish and will spool you on light tackle. The trout are hitting back up in the creeks but are kinda finicky. Mirro-lures and green grubs seem to be the trick on them. Heck I would even throw a topwater bait now. It looks like you threw a cinder block in the water when you get a topwater strike. Remember that a Red will hit a topwater too, so don’t set the hook till you feel him on it. I’ve witnessed a plug come back at me like a rifle bullet with treble hooks, That ain’t funny boys and girls! The older I get, the faster I was! Pulling hooks out of yourself is about as much fun as a root canal, no wait the root canal IS more fun.
This week I would like to tell you folks about another of our local business’s catering to our outdoor habit. One Stop Bait and Tackle. Owner Jeff Warren has been around as long as anyone can remember. He usually has live Shrimp and minnows along with an assortment of cut and artificial bait. Jeff come from a long line of fishermen and can tell you where you might can catch a few. He does keep his honeyhole to himself. Heck he won’t even tell me! Also offered at the One Stop is a wide variety of fresh caught seafood, usually caught by Jeff or one of his buddies. I’m not exactly sure how long jeff will be at the present location due to the possible sale of the property, But till then you can count on him to dispensing his usual witty conversation along with the fishing tips. Ya’ll stop in and check him out soon.
On the hunting side, WHAT HUNTING? I don’t know about you folks but it’s too long till Turkey Season. I know somebody out there will get a bird so send in a photo so we can print it. Till next week remember,Be Safe and take a kid with you. Capt. David
