Headhunter Outdoors Report 6-25-07

June 25th, 2007 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Well hunting season is out so all I have to talk about is FISHING. The Spanish are thick just outside off the inlets in the morning and the Kings are all the way in to the beach. They have been catching them off the piers along with some Tarpon being hooked up but not landed. I’ve heard that the Mahi are in to about 10-15 miles and the bottom fish like Grouper,Snapper, and Black bass are thick on the ledges and hardbottom area’s.
The Specks are Thick up in the New River and some nice Redfish are working the points as well. Topsail Inlet area is producing more Flounder but most of them are small. The Reds are along the banks in shallow water but are real finicky. One day they want live shrimp, then the next day they won’t hit nothing. It gets real frustating when you can see them but they won’t bite. Some big Blues are in the waterway too. Now I ain’t talking 2-3 pounders folks, I’m talking 10-12 pounders. The best way to get one is with a big Pogey on a float rig. Use a little wire leader so they won’t bite you off and Don’t stick your finger in one’s mouth or you will lose it.
Well thats about it for this week, so take a kid fishing! Capt. David

Headhunter Outdoors Report 6-18-07

June 18th, 2007 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Hi folks,Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. I sure hope the wind will lay down because I’m tired of it! This is June, not March. Enough ranting about the weather folks, lets talk fishing. Offshore everything is biting, From bottom fish to pelagics, pick your poison ladies and gents. Kings are being caught from the piers on out. That’s good news for you small boat folks. Just remember to be careful and pay attention going through the inlet. Speaking of the inlet, the Corps of Enginners were dredging Topsail inlet this past week. I don’t know if the buoys are correct yet so be careful!
The piers are reporting Kings, Spanish, Blues, Cobia, Pompano, lounder, Red drum and Black Drum, Sheepshead and everything else. Inshore the Reds are biting good but are scattered. If you find a school don’t tell anybody but me! OK! Seriously there are a lot of nice fish all along the waterway and one spot is about as good as another. If I told you where they were it wouldn’t be as much fun. The live bait is getting better as well. A good cast net in the back off the creeks will turn up Finger mullet, Menhaden, and Shrimp. On a Carolina rig or a float rig you can catch about anything with these baits.
Well I’ve got to go folks the water is calling or was that my wife? Huh guess I’ll go fishing! Till next week, Tight line and Screaming drags to all of you. Hey take a kid fishing too! Capt. David
