Duck Season Is Back!

December 17th, 2007 by Gillwetter Press | No Comments »

Hi folks,Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

Well folks the fishing is cooling off as fast as the falling water temps. The sound is still producing a few Reds and Trout but they are slow to bite and finicky. Finding some warmer water is the key now. Dark bottoms warm faster than light bottoms. Sometimes just a couple of degree’s is all it takes.

The inlets seem to be the hot spots now with some big Reds and trout being caught. Lots of Blues are around too. A steel leader would be advised when they show up and they will show up folks! All the inlet bars are holding nice schools of various sized reds. Remember that the slot is 18-27 inches and only one fish a day. Take a camera and take a picture it will last longer.

Offshore things are happening but the sea conditions can be tricky this time of the year with these fast moving fronts and the wind. Everything seems to be happening from 25-30 miles and on out to the Gulfstream. There are scattered reports of a few bluefin being around as well. Now these are unconfirmed reports but from reliable sources. Just be careful if you decide to go out and tell somebody when to expect your return.

On the hunting side, Duck season is back in! Saturday we saw Buffleheads,Ringnecks, and Mergansers. The key is we saw them and missed. Must be defective shells? We saw a lot of birds headed south and they were way on up there. The weather up north should push a lot of birds our way in the next few weeks. Lets all hope for a good season this year!

Now on to the serious stuff. Santa is going to be making his rounds next week and he don’t want anybody getting any idea’s about shootin’ at his bucks! He said to remind ya’ll that spotlitghting is against the law here and he shoots back! Something about a couple of Cobra’s from New River covering his back! The dude’s got some serious people on his team. Now I hope that everybody gets what they want for Christmas and remember you can’t go wrong with camoflage! I’ve figured out that it has a slimming effect on me and some of my pudgy friends. Happy Holidays Folks!

The Abundance of Wildlife is Unbelievable!

December 4th, 2007 by Gillwetter Press | No Comments »

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

Well the fishing is still going on with the surf being the hot spot. The mullet are tearing it up and I’ve heard reports of some in the 2-3 lb size range. Red drum, Black drum, Trout and lots of Blues are biting. Live bait, cut bait or artificals are working. All you got to do is to figure out what you are after!

The inlet bars are hot spots now too. If the water is calm you can go outside and cruise the beach right outside the breakers and find some huge schools of Red drum. These schools can be 25 fish or 200. Be careful working a boat that close to shore because it don’t take but a second to be in bad trouble. This is a manuever that is best left to VERY experienced boaters!

Offshore the fish are moving farther out by the day and its been rough out there. The fish are there it’s just a matter of getting a good day!

On the hunting side,WHAT A BUCK! Folks it just goes to show you that going out and sitting in the woods can change your life. There ain’t no telling what might walk by out there. The abundance of wildlife in this area is unbelievable! Folks I’ve sit in the woods many times and not even seen a bird and then other time the woods were alive with all species of critters! Even if you are not a hunter, you can hunt with a camera. I would like to extent my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Elbert Christian on the trophy of a lifetime. Now get out in the woods and get your own folks. Duck season is out till the 15th so clean the boat out and get things fixed. One of my buddies shot some Teal down behind Masonboro island on the Dec.1st and saw some Ringnecks too. Maybe the bad weather will push the birds down here in time for the next part of the season. Keep your fingers crossed! Well thats it for this week folks so remember to take a kid with you and be safe!
