Headhunter Outdoors Report 1-15-08

January 15th, 2008 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

Well the fishing is terrible and the ducks are few and far between. Some hardcore folks are catching a few Reds in the surf and inlets but the majority off the fish are not biting. If you just have to go though I would try up in the backs of the creeks. I’ve heard of some nice Trout in Kings creek and Turkey creek. Just remember that they are real shallow and you may not be able to get in and out without a jon-boat and then you may have to walk it a little way to get to the deeper water back in the creek. Nobody is going outside now so the reports are zip on that. Folks it’s cold and ain’t nothing much is going to happen till the water temps reach around 60 degrees. That’s just the plain facts ya’ll!

On the hunting side, there are a few birds around but not many. It just ain’t gotten cold enough to push a bunch of birds down here yet. We can always hope for cold weather up north. Some Bluebills or Scaup are around and some Buffleheads too. You can always count a Merganser to drop into the decoys and maybe an occasional Black duck or Mallard. Its still slow hunting these days folks. I took one of my buddies from Virginia hunting a couple of days and we saw birds but they were heading somewhere besides where we were set up. We did get a drake and hen Bluebill and shot a lot of shells. Hey we wanted to keep them on their toes! We really like to call those misses warning shots. Then again it might be defective shotgun shells. Huh! Any of you folks having that problem too. I can’t believe that I missed those birds. Well thats about all I can ramble on about so you folks be safe and take a kid with you. If they can walk they are old enough to go with you! Till next week folks I hope your decoys are full of birds.

Headhunter Outdoors Report 1-08-2008

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

With the water temps in the 50′s ain’t much biting folks. Now you might catch something if you get out on one of the warm days but its not a sure thing. When the water gets this cold everything shuts down. Some Specks are still around and the drum are too. Getting them to bite is the big trick. Lots of Bluefish are in the surf and inlets. Remember to use wire leader if you are going after blues or you will be tying a lot of rigs.

Offshore the water warms up the farther out you go. Everybody I’ve talked to say they are running 30 miles and farther to find good water temps. I’ve heard scattered reports of the Bluefin and fat alberts are up around Morehead City. Hook into a Bluefin tuna and you will see what you are made of! The weather and wind has been hampering a lot of boaters going out so remember to check the offshore forecast before you go out on the big water. Tell someone when and where you are going and when to expect you back. The North Carolina coast ain’t called the Graveyard of the Atlantic for nothing folks.

Now is a good time of the year to start thinking about next season and get ready for it. Go ahead and take your rig to the boat mechanic and have it serviced, Make sure all your safety equipment is in good order and check out your trailer for potential problems. The biggest problem to look for is rusty springs that can break and bad wheel bearings. Go ahead and spend a little money now and save yourself the aggravation in the spring. All those little things that you said you needed to do last summer are still waiting.

On the hunting side. I don’t know where the ducks are but they ain’t here. What birds that were here have gone on south and no new birds have shown up. Heck I went Saturday and only saw 15-20 birds and none of them came close enough to shoot at. Maybe it will get better! I’ve heard that Lake Mattumuskeet is deserted too. They just vanished folks! When you are as big a quack addict as I am it hurts when no birds are here. I don’t care if I get a shot or not I just like seeing birds in the air.
Well thats it for this week folks so be safe and take a kid with you.
