Headhunter Outdoors Report 2-19-2008

February 19th, 2008 by Gillwetter Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The water temps are slowly climbing and there is still a lot of bait around in the creeks. Hopefully we will have an early spring and the fish will start biting soon. Now that don’t mean you can’t catch fish now, It’s just harder! I’ve heard that some nice trout are being caught way back in the creeks. A reliable source of mine told me he caught a few back in Kings creek and had been catching them in Turkey creek too. The warm sunny days will warm up the dark bottoms in the creeks faster than a light sandy bottom and all it takes is a few degrees to get the fish feeding. It also looks like we are going to have a banner year on the Redfish this year too. Last summer I found several schools of small fish that were just under the limit and even caught a few that was just a little bigger than the bait I was using. Thats a good sign of the recovery of the fish stocks in N.C. Most fisherman think you have to go to Texas or Louisiana or Florida to catch Reds. Wrong! all of the IGFA records for Red Drum are from N.C. What most of them don’t know is we have a world-class fishery right here. Slot limits and possession limits do work folks. The outdoorsmen and women of this state can be proud that they are helping to insure that we have wildlife and fish here for our grandchildren to enjoy. Take the kids out and show them the natural wonders we have around here. Even if you are not a hunter or fisher, the love of nature needs to be passed on to our kids.
On the hunting side, only a couple more weeks of Quail season boys so you better get to it. The next thing is Turkey season folks and I can’t wait. I’m going to Va. this weekend to get the huntin’ cabin ready for the spring season and to do a little scouting. Now is the time to get your stuff together folks cause it will be here before long and I’m ready! Those longbeards better be on their toes when opening day comes. Well thats about it for this week folks so remember to be safe and take a kid with you! Capt. David
