North Carolina’s OutDoors Report

March 25th, 2008 by Gillwetter Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. It shouldn’t be long before the Bonita start showing up on the reefs and I can’t wait! If you have never been and caught one of these little bullets let me tell you about it. Bonita are a member of the tuna family and are built for speed. On light tackle or a fly rod they can’t be beat for fighting power. Some years are better than others but when they show up the liberty ship off Wrightsville Beach is a top spot. Just about any small minnow imitating fly, plug, or jig will do the trick. Now there is a few things you need to know about catching them. When a school starts busting on top try to ease over to them and cast from as far away as possible. Don’t run up on top of the school or they will go down and you will lose them for a while. If other boats are present don’t crowd each other,  just wait for your shot. Usually if you watch the school you can see which way they are moving and get in front of them. Cut the engine and drift. Lots of the time big Blues and Spanish Mackerel will be mixed in. Hey don’t complain if you are catching fish. The main food they seem to be feeding on is glass minnows and I’ve even caught them trolling small Clark Spoons. Folks when one hits they will make a reel’s drag scream. Now I would recommend checking the weather before you go out on the big pond in a small boat. It can get nasty in a hurry and you don’t want to meet the local Coast Guard guys that way. One more thing about bonita fishing is that it is an early morning thing and the bite usually ends mid morning. Then you can go to work! The boss usually won’t get mad if you take him with you.

The water is getting warmer and the fishing is starting to pick up. On the beach the Mullet and Blues are around. Some nice Red and Black drum are also being caught. Back in the sound the docks are holding some Reds and the holes might have some Trout. The Trout fishing is hot up in the River with some folks limiting out. I’ve heard of some real Gator Trout that have been caught over the winter up that way. Offshore things are happening from 25 miles on out to the Stream. Kings,Wahoo,Tuna,Grouper are all biting. Look for the temperature breaks and you can usually find a hungry fish.

I don’t know about you folks but I’m just counting time till Turkey season and Thats all I’ll say about that! Get ready folks the 2008 outdoors games are about to begin and I hope its a good year for everyone. Remember to send in those photos so we can print them and make you famous. Women, Kids, and even you grumpy old farts send in the pics. Well thats about it for this week so be safe and take a kid with you.
