Outdoors Report 5-19-08
May 19th, 2008 by Gillwetter PressHi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Last week I was in the Florida Keys fishing with my wife and did we have fun! We caught Snappers and Groupers. We saw Tarpon and Snook and got a little sunburnt in the process. Heck they wanted us to stay in Florida so badly they tried burning half the state down to keep us there. Folks, they had some massive forest fires and it gives you something to think about when you see miles of burnt forestland. We haven’t had a bad one since the big Holly Shelter fire in the mid 80’s. When it’s as dry as it has been in the last year or so, it don’t take long for a small brush pile to get out of control. Think before you burn anything these days.
Now to the fishing news. I am hearing that the Kings are close to the beaches now and that the piers all around are starting to get a few. All the reefs are loaded with Black Bass and remember that the length is now 12 inches. Grouper are biting on the ledges and deep wrecks now. I hope this wind will lay down before long! Be careful before you go out folks and tell someone when and where you are going.
Inshore the Reds are tearing it up and the Trout are still biting good up in the River. Folks, there are some monster Blues in the sound and waterway now and these things are hungry and mean! The Flounder should be moving in before to long and I can’t wait for some fresh fillets. The water temps are in the low to mid 70’s and the fishing is only going to get better folks. My advice to everybody is GO FISHING! Boat, bank, dock or pier, the fish are biting.
On the hunting side, it’s over till September boys and girls! Here’s a good one for you folks. I have traveled all over N.C. and Va. trying to get a Turkey this year and haven’t done any good. Well my neighbor tells me the other day that he has a big old tom roosting in a tree in his back yard not 100 yards from my house! ARRRGGHHH! It’s no wonder most hunters are bald, from pulling their hair out trying to figure the critters they are after out! Well that’s about it for this week so remember to be safe and take a kid with you!
