Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 12-28-08
December 28th, 2008 by Gillwetter Press | No Comments »Hi folks,Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. If you don’t know it already, the fishing is slow. The surf is slow but a few fish will always bite. Usually it’s where I ain’t! Lots of little trout and some Red drum are still biting for the hardcore fisherman. These last few warm days have warmed the water back in the sound a couple of degrees and have gotten a few fish feeding. Like I’ve said before, find the dark bottom areas folks. A good sunny day in the 70’s will usually turn the fish on this time of the year. Loads of reds are in the sound still and are spooky as heck too. The creeks are usually a good place to start looking for fish because there will be some bait in them. Find the bait, find the fish! Now don’t think fishing in the cold is easy,I’m just saying if you have to go fishing,go!
On the hunting side, Deer season is out after the first of January so you better get your fill for a while. Duck season is in but there ain’t many birds around the sound. If you want to go to the swamps or the Northeast Cape Fear you can find some Woodies and Ringnecks along with an occasional Greenhead. Loads of mergansers are around and they will come to the decoys. Now on another note,Get your best wildgame recipe and enter the Wildgame Cookoff at Poplar Grove Plantation on January 24,2009 if you want more info call Ann Williams at 910-794-0292 or check out the website- capefearwildlifeexpo.com. They have 3 divisions for game, fish and fowl. Cash prizes for all divisions. On March 21st and 22nd the 1st Annual Cape Fear Wildlife Expo will be at the Schwartz Center and the Coastline Convention Center. This is a must for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and they will have something for everyone. Bring the whole family! Well folks I’ve got to go now and pack for one more hunting trip of the year. Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year and take a kid with you!
