Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 2-24-09

February 24th, 2009 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The fishing is still slow but a few folks are catching a few big Reds on Lea island. The water temps are starting to come up and are in the low 50′s now. When the water gets to around 60 degree’s the fish will start biting. Dogwood trees blooming in the spring always has been my sign to hit the water hard. Spring is just around the corner folks.
On the hunting side, things are about over and Turkey season will be here soon. Now is a great time to hit the woods and get to know your hunting property. Follow game trails and look for shed antlers, old scrapes and rubs. Head off into the thickets and see if you bump deer. If you do, look for bedding area’s. Look for food sources that will produce at different times of the year. Grape vines, Big oak trees, and water sources. Don’t overlook the importance of a good water source. The dry summers will dry up all the little swamp puddles and ponds. The wildlife knows from experience where to find water when its dry. Another bonus of off-season scouting is the lack of snakes. Well that’s about it for this week and I really hope it picks up soon so I have something interesting to write about. Till next week, be safe and take a kid with you.

Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 2-16-09

February 16th, 2009 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Hi folks,Capt.David here with this weeks outdoors report or lack thereof. Not much is happening with the fishing seeing as how the water is so cold. On these warmer days you might get lucky and catch a fish but your time is better spent on honeydo’s. You know, the stuff you been putting off because the fish were biting or deer and duck season was in! All that mess your better half has been on you about for the past few months. You need to git-er-done because Turkey season ain’t far off either and the fish will start biting. A far as fishing goes I’m waiting on the Bonita in few weeks. Till then,I’m cleaning and fixing things as hard as I can. I really wish I could tell you the fish are tearing it up but I would be lying! Heck I’ve even had some charter calls and I have had to tell folks the way it is. It won’t be long and we can all look forward to spring soon. Sorry I ain’t got a whole lot to write about but thats the way it is this time of the year. Well till next week,be safe and take a kid with you!
