Drying Out Wrightsville and Carolina Beach

May 31st, 2012 by Capt. Rick Bennett | Comments Off

Hi Folks,

We are drying today in Southeast NC after a much needed 3+ inches of rain courtesy of Beryl. While the rain is much needed, the fishing may suffer for a few days while the salinity returns to the inshore waters and the clarity returns to the ocean waters.

Now here’s my report:

INSHORE: Prior to the storm we were having a good bite of flounder in the inlets and the river. Redfish have been biting most everywhere. Live bait seems to be best, but artificials will produce as well in the right locations.

NEAR SHORE: Bluefish, Spanish mackerel and some chopper blues are patrolling the beach.

OFFSHORE: Kings, amberjack and a few cobia are in the 10-25 mile areas. Live bait as well as dead bait seem to be producing.

GULFSTREAM: Bad weather equals no reports.

UPCOMING: As soon as things settle down a bit expect the inshore flounder and red bite to heat back up. It will not be long until the mahi show up closer to shore. For you fly fishing enthusiasts, I have one of the best flats boat guides in the area ready to take you on a trip to sight fish for tailing reds!

Until next time…LET’S GO FISHING!!!

Inshore, Near Shore, Offshore: Good Fishing in Southeastern NC

May 18th, 2012 by Capt. Rick Bennett | Comments Off

Hi Folks,

Wet weather aside, fishing has been really good this week. The flounder bite and the red drum bite have been very good. Inshore, near shore, offshore and Gulfstream fishing have all been producing good catches. Now here is my report:

INSHORE: The flounder bite on live bait and artificials has been very good. The same can be said for reds. Generally, the flounder have been good on the rising tide and the reds have been good on the falling tide. Live bait near heavy structure and scented artificials have done very well. Best action has been in the inlets, the ICW and the river.

NEAR SHORE: Spanish mackerel continue to provide good action just off the beach. Bluefish are mixed in with the Spanish. Some kings have moved in real close and the cobia bite has begun.

OFFSHORE: Kings are running well in the 10 to 40 mile areas. Live bait, ballyhoo and cigar minnows are the preferred baits.

GULFSTREAM: The stream is producing very good catches of mahi. Some blackfin tuna are being caught and billfish action is heating up.

UPCOMING: Fishing is really taking off. If you like to catch it, with few exceptions, it is probably biting right now. We are in season now for sure and it is definitely time to go fishing. Please be sure to check out the Photo Page on my website for the latest in this year’s catch; www.rodmancharters.com.
