The Cape Fear River Is Full Of Flounder

April 13th, 2005 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Getting better by the day! Whiting are the main game. Inshore, both piers are doing well with lots of small fish from Blowfish to Blues and sharks are plentiful. We want to welcome the new owners of the North Pier. We wish you the best of luck and hope you have plenty of pictures for us. Back to fishing. Down the river some decent whiting are being caught around the Bald Head Island ferry slip. Puppy Drum are up on the flats and it’s only going to get better. Offshore, Yellow fin tuna are around the Frying Pan Tower. Black Bass are also covering the bottom, some as big as four and a half pounds. From what I am seeing in the commercial Flounder catches, this is most definitely going to be a great year. The river is full of Flounder. It might be too soon to hook and line but live bait has started showing up. It is scattered but it is there. Small Menhaden are around the dredge pond at the back of the Island. Maybe it’s worth a try! Let’s get fishing! Keep fishin and releasin… Steve and Karen Labanec Seagull Bait and Tackle 910-458-7135

Yellow Fin Tuna Are Just Plain Thick

April 6th, 2005 by Gillwetter Press | Comments Off

Well, we are finally seeing some good fish coming in. Whiting are in the surf and are no bigger than a pound at this time but they should grow fast now that the sand fleas are up (or near the top.) The Whiting in the river and off the end of Kure Beach Pier are a lot bigger. Blowfish are also showing up with some nice Croakers so things are really getting better inshore. Offshore, if you can afford the gas – Yellow Fin Tuna are just plain thick! I mean catching your limit is no problem if your arms can take it. Also, Wahoo are big. I have heard of some seventy and sixty pound catches. I hope we can catch up with the Charter Boats this week to get some photos for next week?s paper. Closer to shore, Boston Mackerel should show up around the Liberty Ship wreck and day now. I have heard of a few but not many. They should start schooling up and feeding on glass minnows and other similar tackle. A Maria Jig works right! Well, I am sorry that the only picture of fish this week is one with Harry and Huggie in it, but they did catch some small Whiting. Yes, Harry did catch his share for a change. Yes Harry I?m still mad about that Flounder last year!! Let?s get fishing! Keep fishin and releasin… Steve and Karen Labanec Seagull Bait and Tackle 910-458-7135
